There’s always a 1 st for everything, NightWatch Nation.
Just 1 week after getting blown out by the Charlotte Express 28-19 in Charlotte, the Nashville NightWatch ground out a win against those same Express in Nashville this past Saturday.
Despite missing it’s coach (Ryan Balch), it’s top scorer (Jake Wright), and a lineup announcement to start the game, this Nashville team in control most of the way.
The NightWatch started the game in heartbreaking fashion, giving up a break score on the very first point of the game. But, the line of Tyler Conger, John Carden, Adam Paicely, Phil Doughtry, Carter Rae, Tannon Hedges, and Jesse Dahms fought tooth and nail during a 7-minute point to even the score at 1-1. From that point on the NightWatch never trailed again, building a 10-8 lead by halftime and finishing off the game with a 19-15 win.
The offense did well to create scoring opportunities, highlighted by a solid quarterbacking effort by handlers Tyler Conger, Eric Sjostrom, and Blake Waldron as well as cutter Tom Radcliffe.
The defense, to be sure, was the primary catalyst for the win, as one might be well-inclined to look to in a game where only 34 points were scored. Javier “Lil Papi” Ortiz led the way on that end, flying around the field and laying out to the tune of 3 defenses on the evening. Throw in another 2 defenses each for Zack Avello, John Carden, Paul Lally, and Tom Radcliffe. The NightWatch allowed the fewest points the team has given up all season, with Saturday’s 15 goals against.
Nashville has to bring that sort of defensive intensity when Jacksonville and Mischa Freystaetter come to town July 9 in the season finale.
