With a good portion of ultimate players in the region descending upon Nashville for Monkey Bowl 28, now’s as good a time as ever for Nashville to show up big. Talk around NightWatch camp has been about how improved the team is, and the numbers—record aside—back that up. But, unless the results start coming in, outsiders will look at Nashville as one of the bottom feeders in the South. Charlotte provides a welcome test to prove those doubters wrong. We’ll see you there Saturday night.
Charlotte Express @ Nashville NightWatch
6 PM Central, Overton High School
Where They Stand: Nashville (1-3, 5th in South); Charlotte (1-4 T-6th in South)
Last Matchup: Charlotte defeated Nashville (18-17) July 19th to conclude the 2015 season. Nashville sports a 1-2 all-time record against the Express, with all 3 games decided by 3 points or less.
Look for Tyler Conger and Dan Chazin to spearhead the NightWatch handling attack. Conger can make all the throws and exhibits exceptional body control—just check out his mean fake. Chazin’s savvy and decision-making doesn’t always make the highlight reel—though sometimes it does—but it does drive the offense forward and you can’t score a goal without the disc.
You could certainly make a case that the disc work Charlotte’s Micah Hood, Jesse Lieberman, and Matt Bode have done this season stands out as their most dangerous threat. But man, can Jakeem Polk fly! He and Jacob Fairfax lead the express defense with 8 D’s apiece. Coming off a game which saw them give up 30 points to Dallas, you can bet Charlotte’s defense will be itching to bounceback.
Alan Cohen and Jesse Lierbeman have over 350 completions between them and each sport a sparkling 97% completion percentage. As Nashville’s speedy cover man, Javier Ortiz will be charged with making sure those two can’t go over the top to an athlete of Polk’s caliber. It’ll be interesting to see how Nashville plans to disrupt the Express’ dynamic handling group.
